What is Microtonal Music?

Microtonal music uses intervals smaller than the semitone, which is the smallest interval used in conventional Western music. This includes music based on just intonation (pure mathematical ratios), equal divisions of the octave other than 12, and completely alternative approaches to pitch organization.

Why Explore Alternative Tunings?

Different tuning systems offer unique harmonic colors and emotional qualities that are impossible to achieve in 12-tone equal temperament. Just intonation provides perfectly consonant harmonies based on simple mathematical ratios.
